ODU @ 89: Celebrating a Legacy of Unity and Progress
On October 13, 1935, a group of visionary individuals from Offa came together in Lagos to establish what would become a cornerstone of their community—the Offa Descendants Union (ODU). This historic gathering took place at the residence of Pa Amos Olawuyi Bilewu, located at 40 Macullum Street, Sango, Ebute-Metta.
This momentous occasion marked the beginning of a journey dedicated to fostering unity and progress among the Offa people. Importantly, the union was founded with an inclusive vision, inviting membership from individuals of all backgrounds, not exclusively those of Offa descent.
This commitment to inclusivity was exemplified during the union’s inaugural election on May 18, 1937, when Pa William Adedoyin, a respected member from Igbonna, a neighboring village, was elected as the first president.
Such decisions highlight the open and welcoming nature ingrained in the Offa community. From its modest beginnings, ODU has evolved into an influential advocate for socio-cultural and educational advancement within the region.
One of its earliest and most significant achievements was the establishment of Offa Grammar School in 1943—the first community secondary school in Northern Nigeria. This groundbreaking institution has since nurtured numerous individuals, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in various fields.
Graduates of the school have gone on to make noteworthy contributions across diverse sectors, underscoring ODU’s unwavering dedication to education and personal growth. Additionally, ODU has mobilized resources to successfully establish five community schools, ensuring that the young people of Offa have access to quality education and opportunities for personal development.
In addition to its educational initiatives, ODU has played a crucial role in preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of Offa. The union organizes annual cultural festivals that celebrate the rich traditions and customs of the Offa people, fostering a strong sense of pride and belonging among community members.
Other notable accomplishments include the establishment of a hospital and Domestic Science Centre in 1948, as well as the creation of the popular Owode market in 1957—enhancing the community’s infrastructure and well-being.
The Union has also achieved significant milestones, including the initiation and completion of the ODU Secretariat—an impressive accomplishment that speaks to its growth and unwavering dedication.
ODU has also been instrumental in funding the construction of the MOPOL Barrack, further solidifying its role in community development.
Under the leadership of Alhaji Muhydeen Olaniyi Azeez-Salako, ODU has successfully established key facilities such as the Federal Fire Service Office, Nigerian Immigration Service Passport Front Office, Federal Road Safety Area Office, and Kwara State Road Maintenance Agency (KWARTMA) Area Office in Offa.
With more initiatives on the horizon, Alhaji Salako’s leadership promises further progress. As ODU celebrates its 89th anniversary, it remains committed to adapting to changing times while upholding its founding principles.
The union has embraced modern technology to strengthen connections among Offa descendants worldwide, preserving the bond among its members regardless of geographical distances.
The journey of the Offa Descendants Union is not just an organizational story; it is a narrative of resilience, community spirit, and the enduring pursuit of excellence among the Offa people.
Looking toward its 90th year and beyond, ODU is dedicated to fostering development and unity among the Offa people, ensuring that the legacy of its founders continues to inspire future generations.
The journey of the Offa Descendants Union is a remarkable testament to unity, perseverance, and progress—a narrative that will continue to unfold for years to come.
